Mangawhai Central Land Development
Level AI ensured the major earthworks, roading and water management for this 130 hectares community were optimally designed from every angle.
Mangawhai Central is an large-scale master-planned development in the Kaipara District of New Zealand, positioned between Mangawhai village and Mangawhai Heads. It covers approximately 116–130 hectares and seeks to stitch together existing community hubs with new urban landscapes, crafting a new coastal community that bridges town and estuary.
To address the complexity of this development, the local engineer partnered with Allsite.ai leveraging Level AI, to optimize the design whilst respecting complex geotechnical conditions.
The Challenge
The Mangawhai Central development has some big geotechnical constraints including a layer of peat that was just below the surface. Any digging into this area would result in large foundation expenses for any building. The earthworks was split over various zones requiring careful management of cut and fill. The developer additionally had tight timeframes to deliver so speed of delivery and accuracy were critical.
The design had to satisfy local roadway standards while honouring the geotechnical restrictions of the site—cutting into the layer of peat whilst balancing multiple years of earthworks would have been time prohibitive when done manually.
Technology in Action
To overcome these challenges, Allsite.ai's Level AI and Service AI 1.0, intelligent tools designed to automate and optimize engineering designs:
Geotech points loaded in and automatically used to restrain the Level AI model and come up with an optimal surface design.
Roading network compliant with local engineering rules.
Flood modelling performed using Tuflow and Allsite’s automations.
All drawings automatically produced using Allsite.ai’s webapp.
5 years of earthworks balanced through over 10 earthworks stages.
Over 1000 walls and slopes automatically generated and sized.
The Results
This project showcased how an engineering consultancy can leverage advanced technology to offer real advantages to their clients through speed and accuracy of design.
The client, Alvarium benefited from faster turn arounds and more development options explored than traditional manual CAD drawn models and plan sets.
“Loading in data to Level AI was easy for the team, including complex geotechnical requirements and local engineering rules.
Once loaded we could iterate on the design rapidly and deliver full grading models, automatically generated plan-sets that were submitted directly to council.”
